Question:
Is science really about beliefs and feelings like the warming alarmists claim or is it about facts and evidence?

I've never seen a a warming alarmist say "here's the evidence". They almost invariably talk about BELIEVING in AGW and make emotional arguments like all the scientists believe in it (even though that's been thoroughly disproven) so I'll feel smart if I agree.

For some reason we have got it in our heads that science is some kind of democratic process.

All in favor of gravity...

All opposed...

Ok, the nays have it. Screw gravity. From now on we float everywhere and get around by careful manipulation of flatulence. Stock up on beans everyone. The new Olympic racers will be lactose intolerant.

I truly wish they were right. I would love to simply have a vote and cancel global warming. That would be incredibly convenient and I am sure most of us would happily disapprove of it. But, the climate doesn't give a damn what we want or what we believe. We can believe in it or dismiss it but it doesn't make a difference. The climate has never heard of democracy and isn't impressed with our refusal to accept it changing.

the simple truth of the matter is that most people don't know squat one way or the other and thus "believe" or do not "believe". The main problem for this does seem to come from the scientists themselves, those who have come to a conclusion with (what some scientists, including myself) would call inadequate cause and then proselytized a need for action based on that (what I would call) unfounded conclusion.

The problem is not science, the problem is people politicizing an issue. The science says 1) the climate is changing (but how much and how fast is arguable); 2) CO2 and other similar compounds can act as "greenhouse" gases; 3) CO2 content in the air has gone up roughly 30% in about a century or so; 4) the change in greenhouse gas concentrations may affect climate behavior. Everything else beyond that is not demonstrated. Correlation is not proof of causation.

It's not a religious belief, it's a *scientific* one. Evidence based, and thus falsifiable by contrary evidence. Us science types are wacky that way.

In a meaningful sense, scientists can't 100% prove anything. *Anything*. That the Earth goes around the sun. That germs cause disease. That my desk is not actually a shape-shifting alien. Anything.

That said, there are some things that they can prove to several 9's (that is, 99.999% or whatever). This is, in essence, why scientists talk about "theories" rather than "facts". It's not quite the same thing that most people mean by the word "theory". The scientific definition of the word "theory" means more like "best available explanation as supported by evidence" than "guess".

I believe AGW to be true.

I also believe that 2+2=4.

The problem is that we use the word "believe" in different ways.

The major ways:

Rational belief: hold to be true because of overwhelming evidence (I believe the Earth goes around the sun)

Approximation: predict or guess to be approximately true, with no real evidence that I'm aware of either way, though I know such evidence exists (I believe there are around a million people in the Phoenix metro area)

Faith: hold to be true entirely in the absence of supporting material evidence (I believe God exists)

Blind faith: hold to be true despite evidence profoundly to the contrary (eg denialists who believe that scientists *don't* mostly accept AGW)

Science is about getting that next government grant even if that means perpetuating a lie.

It's laughable how liberals idolize global warming alarmist science that provides absolutely no service to anyone, yet demonize the science of the pharmaceutical companies that saves millions of lives every year.

Science is about developing models or theories of reality that are consistent with experimental observations. That is it. At the moment the best models we have suggest that our planet is warming because of our greenhouse gas emissions. The experimental observations are in keeping with those models.

Over the past 30+ years we have not seen a model or theory produced that fits the experimental observations and does not include our greenhouse gas emissions.

The first model wins until the second one is developed. And if it is developed then science will adapt to include it. Until then, we have a good theory, with good matches to observation. And understandably, it is therefore the theory/model that scientists currently support.

It is a religion. If the policy response was to promote nuclear power, most of the alarmists would turn into skeptics.

There is facts and evidence to support it, but it tends to get exaggerated to push an agenda. Scientists are under pressure not to 'give fodder to skeptics'. IPCC summaries do not match the underlying scientific reports. Then they try and claim scientists are in agreement, so you must agree to the agenda of the religious environmentalists.

It is mostly about making people feel they are part of a cause of saving the planet, even though the scientists' own models show that the policies being proposed would accomplish nothing. This is similar to recycling.

All the science points towards global warming.

All the (sane) scientists believe in it, due to the research that's been done.

Simply saying 'it's not a thing' doesn't disprove it, nor make a valid argument.

Facts and evidence. Scientists do, of course, sometimes come up with hypotheses on the basis of previous experience and for which they do not yet have evidence, but they always state that something is a hypothesis.

There is plenty of evidence for climate change, dear. Few serious scientists do NOT accept that evidence.

Science is about finding the truth for its own sake, without any preconceived notions or agenda. It's only when politics and money become involved does it take on an agenda. In science there are no conclusions, only what we know now, which may be proven false with further testing, and statistical analysis.

Science is about taking facts, summarizing them into hypothesis, testing hypothesis to be wrong or promoting them to theories, further testing theories to be replaced (no long wrong by the time they are theories) or promoting them to laws.

Science includes models that predict. Science makes estimates of errors in models.

Denying global warming is entirely about feelings.

Sorry but that's laughable you seem to be confusing denial with the science on climate change

many of those who you would refer to as 'alarmists' post links to science sites that show the vast amount of evidence on what is happening.

e.g.

NASA - http://climate.nasa.gov/vital-signs/global-temperature/

NOAA - https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/global/201513

USGS - http://www.usgs.gov/climate_landuse/

UK Met - http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate-guide

CSIRO (Australia) - http://www.csiro.au/en/Research/OandA/Areas/Assessing-our-climate/State-of-the-Climate/2014-SoC-Report

Japan - http://ds.data.jma.go.jp/tcc/tcc/

Your own questions shows your inability to back your claims with any science, which is admittedly hard for you given there is not one science organisation in the world that disputes climate change.

But then the claim of "beliefs and feelings" is a little strange coming from denier who put all their 'faith' in rants from blogs and forums, deniers who can not offer one genuine science link to their many absurd claims.

But please, prove me wrong, provide a link to your claim "even though that's been thoroughly disproven" if you even try it will be more denier blogs because the claim is totally groundless and I think even many deniers are now starting to grasp that.

Really? I think evidence is presented all the time--for example, the global measures of surface temperature produced by NASA, NOAA, Hadley Centre, BEST and JMA all showed 2015 as the warmest year on record.

Many deniers "believe" that the Earth is not warming, but the evidence shows otherwise.

It's soooo complicated that they have to use inferences, probabilities, and innuendos to make their case and claim "that's how science works".

They currently use climate modelling to help keep their "alarmunistic" language flowing in a negative direction. It's terribly inaccurate, but they will keep using it as proof. (We might be better off watching Hollywood productions of climate change/global warming. At least we could get some exciting visual effects to watch.)

Quote by René Dubos, French scientist, environmentalist, author of the maxim "Think globally, act locally": "Our salvation depends upon our ability to create a religion of nature."

Quote by Al Gore, former U.S. vice president, mega-millionaire, and large CO2 producer: "The fate of mankind, as well as religion, depends on the emergence of a new faith in the future. Armed with such a faith, we might find it possible to resanctify the earth."

Quote by Mikhail Gorbachev, communist and former leader of U.S.S.R.: "I envisage the prinicles of the Earth Charter to be a new form of the ten commandments. They lay the foundation for a sustainable global earth community."

Quote by Prabhath P., environmentalist and member of Intuition Network: "The spirit of our planet is stirring! The Consciousness of Goddess Earth is now rising against all odds, in spite of millennia of suppression, repression and oppression inflicted on Her by a hubristic and misguided humanity. The Earth is a living entity, a biological organism with psychic and spiritual dimensions."

You have the pseudoscientists who go by belief. Then you have true scientists that go by facts. The fact is that those believers cannot scientifically define Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming. They can't you when it started. Their predictions have all proven false.

Quote by Noel Brown, UN official: "Entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000. Coastal flooding and crop failures would create an exodus of "eco-refugees," threatening political chaos."

And yet these con artists want us to yield our wealth and liberties to them. That is not SCIENCE that is WITCHCRAFT.

The National Academies of Sciences has lots of material for you. You can complain that you have never educated yourself, but you should recognize that that is your fault. Books and science journals don't just come knocking on your door; you have to learn. Here's a good place to start.

http://nas-sites.org/americasclimatechoices/more-resources-on-climate-change/climate-change-evidence-and-causes/

And here is a magazine article that I think provides a very good summary of how we know AGW is real. It ran in ScientificAmerican almost 10 years ago, so of course there has been massive increases in our understanding since then, but it still lays-out the concepts better than I've seen elsewhere.

http://nature.berkeley.edu/er100/readings/Collins_2007.pdf

Climate researchers publish their papers -- and read the research by others -- in the various science journals. You can subscribe to the journals and read the actual papers, though it is very difficult reading if you are not already expert in the subject. Remember these are written by people on the cutting-edge and to an audience of others on the cutting-edge.

The leading journal for environmental studies is Nature. They now publish so much research about climate change that they have spun-off a specialized journal: Nature Climate Change. You can subscribe or just read the abstracts for free to get the gist of the work and conclusions.

http://www.nature.com/nclimate/index.html

You can also get a daily summary and press releases for new papers in your email daily. This is not just climate science, but a broad survey of interesting new learning. The press releases are written to be understood by a broader audience than the actual papers. It is free.

https://www.sciencedaily.com/

Time to stop complaining that you don't know anything, and time to start educating yourself. Your ignorance is your fault alone, so go end it.

Is science really about beliefs and feelings like the warming alarmists claim or is it about facts and evidence? Three big earthquakes will shake the three superpowers; 1st big earthquake in Russia; 2nd (bigger one) in China; 3rd (biggest of the three) will be in America. NATO will nuke Ukraine to blame Russia for it; then NATO will nuke Russia from Scandinavia. China will attack Russia; but will not get past Ural Mountains; bio-genetic weapon will be used against Chinese soldiers (they will run back to China and hide in closets in fear) and weather weapon will freeze Siberia to - 200 Celcius; stadium-size chunks of unmeltable ice will fall from the lower sky (because when rockets go into higher sky they bring this ice down to lower sky). Russia will destroy Turkey and America. China will have a hole across the whole country to the abyss (because of another super weapon used to stop Chinese aggression); radiation from this hole will be massive; Chinese will try to keep quiet about it; a lot of people will fall into this hole.

Scientists don't see dinosaurs because of radiation. Only Eurasia and Alaska (both without coasts) will remain after demons blow up Antarctica (which surrounds the flat earth) and Greenland melts. Move to Ural Mountains or inland Alaska. Sionists want war between Russia and Germany over Serbia from June to October on their holidays because (666 times 3)+(6 times 3) = 2016 (in their twisted logic).

Tube people = demons. Clones = demons. Human costumes that demons wear = demons. Dinosaurs and 666ed people have triple stranded DNA; normal person can't swallow 666ed food (designed for 666ed people). Demons live inside clones. Bacteriologist Alexandre Yersin (who discovered Bubonic plague) is depicted on the Shroud of Turin. There is another shroud on which blasphemer Yosef (who was crucified on a pole in 1066 AD) is depicted. Menachem Mendel Schneerson, Lenin (el=deity in Hebrew, nine = no in German; so, when chanted repeatedly is blasphemy against the Creator), and Yosef were possessed by Azazel; now, Rico Cortes is possessed by Azazel.

WW3 happens; 7% of people will be left; after people are tired of war, they will elect the antichrist as one world leader; don't vote. ISIS stands for Israeli Secret Intelligence Service. Next false flag: Statue of Liberty in order to attack Iran; one big shake, one giant step forward, one giant collapse. Move away from coasts as nukes will go off in the ocean (at where tectonic plates meet; result: megatsunamis 1km high).

Wear natural clothing so that if a bomb goes off it won't stick to the body as fast as synthetic clothes. All metal will be burned for fuel; so, save knives, crowbars, shovels, wood-burning stoves, etc. Also, save cloth/fabric/textile to cover the wounds and diseases.

Eat natural food because nanochips, cells of aborted fetuses, bug DNA, and other poisons are in food that is commonly sold; reject vaccines, medical care, medicine, etc. because nanochips are administered thru IVs, implants, fillings, etc. If 1000-1500 nanochips are in your right hand, then you can't make proper Orthodox sign of the cross with the right hand; last mercy for you then will be to cut the hand off.

Seraphim of Sarov and Sergiy of Radonezh will be resurrecred after WW3 for a short time; Seraphim of Sarov will show the new Ruski Tsar who will fight the antichrist for about 2 years and 8 months. Those who go see Seraphim of Sarov will be healed of their infirmities/illnesses/sicknesses/ diseases; if you want to see him then, hurry because he won't stay longer than a few weeks.

Earth is flat; stands on 3 pillars (the Most Holy Trinity); pillars stand on water at zero Kelvin. Zodiac is planetary prison of demons; don't believe in horoscopes or you'll exhibit the traits of the trapped demons. Most thoughts and dreams are from demons; demons never do good. Sleep fully clothed; pray the Jesus prayer. Pray to your guardian angel to have normal sleep.

Humans were created about 7525 years ago. Ruski Orthodox Christian Vyacheslav Krasheninnikov was the last prophet before Enoch and Elijah return to preach against the antichrist.

Birds participate in time creation. It's a sin to kill birds. Dinosaurs live under our level. They will get out through sinkholes and lakes. To kill them, go for their nerves. Save the birds; but kill the dinosaurs. First dinosaur will come out of Volga River in Russia.

Demons grow human skin (from a sample taken during abduction) and put it on so as to look like us. Demons will invite people to be healed inside their UFOs; those who go will be like zombies after. Gov't provides demons with diamonds and allows demons to abduct people. If you're being abducted, slowly pray the Jesus prayer.

Don't panic. Demons use diamonds and souls to power their UFO craft. The bigger the diamond, the more it lasts. Demons have 4 UFO bases: 1)Moon 2)Inside fake mountain Kailash in Tibet 3)In lake Baikal in Russia 4)In Atlantis which is underneath the Mariana Trench in Pacific Ocean. There are no aliens. Nobody lives on other planets.

Airplanes that go down are hit by demons because they need the airspace to fight Jesus. Antichrist is pale with red eyes. He's possessed by Satan since he's 12 years old. He flies. He wears gloves to hide long nails. He's surrounded by demons who appear as angels of light.

Don't go into a UFO to be healed by demons. Green 666 is given by isotope rays on wrist or forehead when people stretch hands to receive small plastic grey card with no name on it (World Passport). Police will microchip and isotope ray people on the highways. Microchipped people will be influenced by computers to take grey plastic card; but when they do, 666 is given. Food stores will isotope ray people too. Antichrist will also release prisoners to mark people. Reject 666 at all cost because it leads to permanent hell.

If you're about to be marked, pray the Jesus prayer. Hide with Orthodox Christians to escape 666; leave all electronics behind so that antichrist's minions can't track you. Give to charity in the name of Archangel Michael; he rescues people from temporary hell twice a year (or brings them up a level, that is, to a level with less punishment; eventually, people are freed). Feed the pigeons; when pigeons bow down, people are saved from temporary hell. Forgive me.
