Question:
Help, need some new way to get my family and friends concerned about Global Warming.?
2007-05-29 06:42:23 UTC
So I've tried
- talking
- watching the documentary "Inconvenient truth"
- Setting rules ( like turning off the lights, buying a hybrid etc)
- Volunteering
- I've shown pictures

I've completely run out of ideas as to how to get them concerned about this...its pretty difficult when they are so caught up with other stuff.

Thanks in advance.

Have a global warming party. Do fun things and talk about how each of us can make a difference. Have everyone sign a fun contract and post the list of everyone who signed on a website that you make for your family and friends. (Create a blog. They are free.) Then have them communicate with each other using the blog to talk about going green and more. Here are a few websites to help you with your party. Hope this helps. (Do it on a Sunday afternoon (after church, perhaps).

Hope these ideas help.

Nata:

I'm not trying to be negative about an issue you obviously feel is important... Here's another perspective. The average temperature on Venus and Mars has risen as much or more than the Earth's average temperature over the last 10 years... Maybe your family isn't concerned, because they realize it's not really something (heat) people are doing or can effect? I believe the Sun is responsible and alot of leading scientists agree, but it doesn't help the Media sell newspapers, promote democrats or get TV ratings.

These same experts say the heating trend which is approaching a 100 year conclusion, will start into a cooling trend. I bet you're young enough that you will see the Global Warming hype turn into a new Ice Age Panic in the next 4-10 years. My guess is, you won't get as excited when the Media tells you we're all going to freeze, maybe your parents have already learned not to put stock in Meda Fueled Disaster Scenarios.

A better question would be "What has convinced you?". Do you have some solid undisputed proof that it is occurring and that there is something that can be done about it? So far, in all my extensive research, the only absolutely solid undisputed proof I have seen is that the sun is causing a rise in temperature on all the planets in this solar system. That tells me that there is no action we can take to change it.

I do wonder why no one is taking any steps to protect property if, indeed, sea level will rise significantly. There seems time to build flood barriers and dams if we really want to make a difference. But no one is proposing any such thing. Why is that? What if no amount of energy savings or carbon dioxide decrease will help? Why isn't anyone interested in beginning a process to move vulnerable coastal populations to higher ground?

Believe me, when the likes of Al Gore started with this "carbon credit" nonsense it convinced me that they are only trying to fool us. So before you go around switching off lights or driving a hybrid, look at what the global warming prophets are actually doing.

If you see them closing down their big houses, not flying in private or charter planes, not driving large automobiles and installing solar panels then you should take them seriously. Do you realize you are taking action based on a movie and story Al Gore is promoting yet Al Gore probably uses more energy to heat his swimming pool for a day than you do to heat your house for a month?

One large chartered jet probably burns more fuel in one coast to coast flight than all the vehicles in your state on the road during the morning rush hour. I implore you, believe what they do not what they say.

To directly answer your question, the best way to get them concerned about global warming is to lie to them. Make stuff up to scare them. It seems to have worked on you.

.

Response to your response:

You have only anecdotal information and that is enough for you to want to "do something". I am sorry, but I have seen such things occurr throughout my life. They mean absolutley nothing. Even the global warming zealots are talking about the effects it is going to have years down the line. It can't possibly be causing localized effects already. You sound like a nice person. But you are allowing them to turn you into a useful idiot. This is their term, not mine. It refers to people who believe the lie and keep it going.

Easy, the scare approach doesn't work, so try a different approach, encouragement.

Show them how doing the right thing saves them money, from a digital thermostat, to CFLs, to washing laundry in cold water and hanging to dry, all of these save them cash.

Cash saved is cash they can spend elsewhere, and that can be a good incentive. Basically it's economically good for the home to go environmentally friendly.

Other than that, you can offer an incentive, like if you have some money, offer to match the savings they get on their electric bill with cash. So if they save $40 over a year, you'll give them $40.

Basically the negative stuff isn't a good incentive, so give them positive stuff.

All of your stuff is like an angry parent saying "do your chores", but noone really likes doing chores. You need to be the parent that says "do your chores and you'll get a treat."
2007-05-29 07:16:47 UTC
You can show them that it takes very little to start making a difference and show them how just very small steps will definitely help. Things like using CFL's instead of incandescent light bulbs or using cloth napkins will save money and they are very easy steps. Environment and they will win! Walking/running/biking instead of driving will eliminate the pollution that would have been created driving and is good for the health. Another "double bonus"!

Showing them things such as those that they can do can show that they can not only work towards helping the environment but also towards their own ends and it can be them just saving money/improving themselves. Then, they barely need even think about the environmental impact of what they're doing. Hopefully, they may start getting into the swing of things as their interests might be piqued about what else they can do once they've started...

www.climatechallenge.gov.uk should help you communicate the issue a bit better.

You may find Joanna May's work helpful too,

www.joannamacy.net

but don't beat yourself up about not convincing other people, an addict, especially ones supported by powerful cultural drug pushers, will not really listen until it hits them personally. Look at how people carry on smoking.

All you can do is be there for them when they want to change.

You may have a difficult time convincing your adult friends - many of us are old enough to remember when "The Next Ice Age Is Coming!" was all the rage. Also, politics keeps rearing its ugly head - people seem more likely to believe something when a member of their own party says it.

You might have better luck with kids, most of whom are still forming their own views of the world.

Check this out.

This is a link to the webpage for a really interesting documentary that was on tv in the UK. If you can get hold of a copy it might be just what you are looking for to get people to take notice and start changing the way they live... good luck

It sounds like your family needs to educate you as to why they aren't concerned about global warming.

Perhaps they aren't concerned because they ARE educated.

Perhaps it's because they've done the research to find that manmade global warming doesn't exist. Global warming has been happening and is directly a result of sunspots. The sunspots increase/decreases earth's irradiation and the earth warms/cools....and then 800 years later (the part al gore didn't tell you) the CO2 levels go up/down.
2007-05-29 07:19:47 UTC
Have you tried running around screaming "the sky is falling! the sky is falling!"

Stressing out about global warming is pointless, we didn't cause it.. we can't stop it. There are valid economic reasons for doing SOME of the things you want, try that approach if you must continue the Chicken Little act.

No you don"t. They are wise not to listen to you. Only fools believe in man made global warming. Being concerned for the environment should be for the concern of the environment. Not alowing your self to be sucked into some stupid political propaganda used to get you to do or vote for somthing that is wrong.
2007-05-29 06:53:12 UTC
that movie and al gore (although doing some good it seems from publicity alone) have really hurt the credibility of this very real issue. they may respond better if you use economic persuasion. In other words, show them the long term savings of being more energy efficient.

I don't think forcing people to believe what you believe is the right answer. You have given them information, let them make their own judgment!

If they are animal lovers you can educate them that we are losing the polar bear in the Artic. They are starving to death and their home is melting at a fast rate.

By the ice caps melting, it will forever change the oceans and the marine life. Our ecosystem is changing for the worst.

Education is the best tool to change bad habits.

Do some research. FInd out if global warming is really the problem it is made out to be.

tell them this

WHO OR WHAT IS TO BLAME

Irresponsible Agriculture , expanding populations and its effects are the planets biggest enemies.

This text only covers some aspects of Climate change ,i.e.effects of deforestation and subsequent man made desertification ,because of irresponsible farming using chemicals ,over pumping carbon aquifers, over grazing ,wild fires (because of slash and burn gone out of control).

Water and air polution ,such as caused by

industrial contamination ,the contaminating effects of the cities(the internal combustion engine) ,are other stories.

All of these are also man made ,such as the high industrial chimneys pumping contamination into the clouds and the burning of tires, some of this polution has been found in the ice in the polar regions.

There are natural cycles in the planets life

but a lot is influenced by mans existance ,this is increasing with overpopulation, putting strains on Natural resources and increasing contaminations .

The thinner ozone layer helps to speed this up. This is caused mainly by air polution ,also as a result of mans actions.

In North Africa,India,Mexico ,millions of people are effected by land loss , desertification and some have died as a result.

Now many animals are becoming sick because of changes in temperature .

Vital links in the food chains are disapearing affecting other species further along in the chain .

We are witness to a mass exstinction ,for the first time since the dinosaurs.

Of the earth's estimated 10 million species, 300,000 have vanished in the past 50 years.

Each year, 3,000 to 30,000 species become extinct.

Everything is happening so fast it is not possible to monitor things any more.

The Sahara is growing by 7 kilometers a year.

Most of the desserts are as a results of mans actions. And they are increasing .In the dinosaurs days ,there were few desserts.

Collectively this planet is drying up .

Each degree rise in temperature means 10%crop loss

There is less and less water (because of deforestation),to irrigate Agriculture.

Arable lands and their farms are lost all over the globe. Many farmers sons abandon farming and head for the cities.

Northern China is drying up, what once were millions of food producing people, are now hungry refugees ,running for their lives from the all consuming dust storms.

This will have a great effect on world food prices when they start buying at what ever cost, to feed their people.

The farmers that are left have to feed some 70 million more people than the year before but with less topsoil(because of desertification and irreverible erosion)

Over the last half century,

Population growth & rising incomes have tripled world grain demand from 640 million tons to 1,855 million

In the near future the global farming community will not be able to feed every body ,food prices will continue to rise. .

RISING SEAS

The northpole is melting ,and we will know it without ice in our life times.

This does not affect the sea level ,because it is ice that is already in the water.but the melting ice from Green land and the south pole ,and the Glaziers is potable water lost forever and rises the sea levels.

Are We responsible ?

Is it the Sun?

Is it God who wants to punish us?

Is it Gaia who wants to clean some parasitic infestation?

Is it a Natural cycle?

Who cares ? that is not important any more

WHAT IS important -is that we are gonna be in trouble

WHAT CAN WE DO????????????????

The best we can do as individuals is be more responsible ,in our own neck of the woods

Organise well publicized clean up parties ,talk on the radio, hold citizan meetings, get the shools involved to plant trees and listen to environmental awareness talks.

If you do any cleaning up ,leave signs behind saying who cleaned, why and ask people not to start dumping rubbish again ,leave a hole or bins ,in case people come back with trash ,and they always do.

We have done a lot of comunity cleaning and if you dont leave alternatives or try to work on peoples guilt feelings (some people actually have those ,but not many) ,than your efforts are a waste of time.

That is what we do in Mexico.

POSITIVE ACTIONS

Print Tshirts with slogans ,hang posters all over the place (with recycled paper if possible).

Classify trash, take out all the organic waste and make compost with it ,the worst you can do is throw it with the trash,or burn it .

70% of contamination is due to organic waste that is mixed in with the garbage .

and it is just as bad in the sewer where it helps to breed rats and in the landfill it poisons the ground .

This is the easiest to take care of .

First of all we have to clasify trash ,at least keep the organic to one side ,like in a plastic bin with a lid .

If you got a few meters of ground ,you only need 1 or 2 square meters in a shallow hole ,(in the shade) ,that you can wet now and again .

Where you dump everything that is organic .

Toilet paper,bones vegetable cuttings ,eggshells,

deadbodies ,excrement ,cardboard,leaves,

shredded paper, old clothes (if they are organic),

Cover regularly with leaves or a piece of plastic,

to keep humid and to hide any smell .

REGULARLY spray some water over it ,but do not saturate it or the worms will die or leave.

The worms will decompose the wastes, turning it into beautifull black soil for the garden of flower pots .

If you are in a apartment ,if you have a balcony get a big plastic bin drill some holes in the side and lid ,

and add a few buckets of sand now and again to put over the trash ,you should realy stir or move the stuff at times to airate it ,and ensure that the decomposition is even ,keep moist

this rubbish does not get big very fast and the thing works for a long time with out getting full

----------------------Some more Positive thoughts

Global warming cannot be stopped but being friendlier to our Environment cannot be bad and maybe we buy some time.

If you want to help the planet ,plant a tree every week ,if everyone on the planet did we we would be able to slowdown the destructive processes.

Reduce carbon emisions, and they are already working on that ,by alternative forms of energy We need more regulations on carbon production.

Dont use aerosol cans,

Dont burn trash

Limit water use

Recicling wastes.

AGRICULTURE must invest in

Waterharvesting projects ,(such as thousands of small dams).to redirect over ground waterflows from the rains into the ground to supply subteranian water supplies.

Assist the capture of carbon and the production of water by promoting Reforestation.

The world bank pays large subsidies for reforrestation to capture carbon and the best tree for this is the Pawlonia .

Agricultural education and improvements to follow the principals of sustainability and soil management

GOVERNMENT

The protection of existing forrests.

Stop building more highways,

Urban planning to include vegetation

Stop building cities encourage people to return to the land to conduct their business from there ,which now has become possible thanks to the internet.

More environmental or land ,design to prevent bush fires, such as--fire breaks .

More dams, regulations and control for public behaviour.

Alternative effeciant public transport to discourage the use of the internal conbustion engine.

SCHOOL SYSTEMS

Education to motivate people to auto sufficiency by building more home food gardens.

Education on environmental awareness.

Education on family planning ,to curb overpopulation.
