Are you asking this for the purpose of historical interest or because you want to travel there?

If historical interest then yes - the Burma Railway was built by Japanese POWs in WW2 from Bangkok to Rangoon (now Yangon). This railway is infamous for the harsh conditions the POWs lived and worked under and was known as the Death Railway. The movie the Bridge on the River Kwai is about the building of the railway. Most of it is now not operational but some is still in place and tourist trains operate - not sure where too and from but I am sure a quick web search or a Lonely Planet can help.

If you just want to catch a train and am wondering why I am yabbering on about WW2 - then I suggest you visit the following site for information about intercity train journeys pretty much anywhere in the world. While the route map does not show any routes crossing the border I am sure it will still be helpful. With the help of this site I know a guy who went from London to Singapore - all the way by train.

Your question is very broad and there is so much to tell about Thailand - especially for a first timer like you. There are plenty of answers on this topic on Yahoo!Answers if you care to search for them. A few tips - it IS a different country with different cultures and customs and way of doing things. DO NOT go there expecting people to be your servants and DO NOT expect things to operate the same way things do in your country. Be patient. Smile a lot. DO NOT ever make fun or silly remark about the king or the royal family. Smile a lot. But... for really comprehensive advice and a good investment - buy yourself a copy of the Lonely Planet Guide to Thailand or even the smaller guide "The best of Bangkok" (also by the Lonely Planet Guide). These two books are invaluable for first timers to Thailand.

Unequivocally no.

There was a line over 60 years built by the Japanese using slave labour. It now runs as far as Sai Yoke, over 150 km short of the crossing point into Myanmar. The locals have long since carted away the metal tracks on both sides of the border.

I should add it is very difficult for Westerners to get visas to cross by land and continue into Myanmar. Normally they have to fly into Yangon.

Well fortunately it's not called the Death Railway because that's what happens to the passengers!

Yes, there is, and here's a link http://www.seat61.com/Kwai.htm

It gives you times and some history about that historic railway, possibly built by one of your ancestors.
